Fanny Packs
Once upon a time, fanny packs were no more than a practical accessory. But at one point in history, they became a notable fashion statement and were often accompanied by other vibrant and quirky items like neon slap bracelets. Of course, that trend never lasted!
Tamagotchi Pets
Smithsonian tells us that Tamagotchi pets were a massive hit when they were first released, but nowadays, they’re no more than niche collectors’ items for those remembering the nostalgia of the phase. Boomers, however, know that these particular toys are best left in the ‘90s where they came from!
Jell-O Salads
Back in the 1950s, mixing Jell-O with a salad was something people did fairly often. Some families would even go so far as to present it as part of their Thanksgiving dinner. However, over time, people have started to realize that this is actually pretty weird, so the trend never stayed.
Heelys
Flying around on shoes that turn into roller skates might have seemed like a fun idea for kids in the past, but the number of accidents that happened from wearing them caused the trend to die out. That, and the fact that they were pretty uncomfortable to walk in!
Inflatable Furniture
People really tried to make inflatable furniture more of a trend back in the ‘90s. However, the trend ‘deflated’ when the chairs kept bursting all the time and when people realized that there was no way you could make them as comfortable as a regular chair or sofa.
Stick-on Car Eyelashes
Every now and then, you’ll still see someone driving around in a car with eyelashes that stick to the headlights. But you may remember a time when these were more popular. Of course, boomers knew that this was never going to last because of how silly it looked.
Fitness DVDs
The DVD began to completely die off in around 2019, as reported by CNBC, and one of the biggest victims of that was the fitness DVD. At one time, they were seen as a convenient way to get into shape at home, but now they’ve been replaced by online classes and apps.
Clackers
Tons of kids used to have these toys back in the day, but even all the way back then, boomers recognized how dangerous they were and knew that they were never going to stay popular for this reason. Safety stands quickly made sure they were banned!
Wide Ties
Wide ties were popular between 1950 and 1970, as told in the history report by Filling’s Clothing. But this trend has since been mostly abandoned, other than for people who like to dress in a vintage way as part of their style.
Mullets
In parts of the UK and Europe, the mullet is making a bit of a comeback, and you’ll still see people sporting one in some of the southern U.S. states. Gone are the days, however, when loads of people used to get this haircut because they thought it looked cool.
Square-Toed Shoes
Here’s another part of men’s fashion that was once considered a staple but has quickly died out. Boomers in the ‘90s and early 2000s saw this fashion come around and knew that it was never going to last long because, well, they didn’t look that great.
Matching Sets
Again, you’ll still see people wearing matching sets from time to time but their popularity has faded a lot over time. Every time most boomers saw people wearing these years ago, they knew it was only a matter of time before their popularity died off.
Vests
Vests were popular in the U.S. and around the world for many decades for the average person, but are now restricted to fairly niche types of fashion tastes. People these days prefer to dress with sleeves, and rightly so, according to the boomers out there!
Double Denim
The ‘Canadian tuxedo’ was a popular fashion choice that many boomers mistook as a wardrobe malfunction. Despite people insisting that it was the coolest way to dress for many years, the trend has died out and you hardly ever see people wearing it these days.
Chain Belts
Throughout the ‘90s and the early 2000s, people wore belts that resembled chains, and boomers hated this since day one! It always seemed over the top, and the boomers were glad to see the back of them when the trend died out around 20 years ago.
Perms
CNN has reported that in some settings, perms have been making somewhat of a comeback in the last year or so. However, the trend is nowhere near as popular as it used to be, as people have retired from the idea, mainly due to concerns about the health of their hair.
Nylon Windbreakers
Nylon windbreakers were once a popular choice for their lightweight and practical design, especially in sporty or casual wear. Now, they’re only really worn by people who run a lot or those who spend a lot of time shopping in vintage thrift stores.
