17 Old-Fashioned Ways of Thinking Society Says Should Be Forgotten

Society has evolved massively over the decades, though some people accuse it of being stuck in the 1950s. Many older people cling to outdated beliefs and pass them down to some of the younger generations, but society recommends forgetting old-fashioned ways of thinking, particularly these 17 beliefs.

Women Should Do All the Childcare

For centuries, it was the norm for men to work and women to stay home and raise the children. However, with women now working just as much as men, it’s incredibly old-fashioned to think women should still do 100% of the childcare. Younger couples are embracing more equal family dynamics.

Boys Will Be Boys

Boys will be boys is a sentiment that society today associates with bad behavior and toxic masculinity. Psychology Today warns that this idea generates unconscious gender biases and excuses aggressive male behavior as ‘biological.’ This old-fashioned way of thinking is dangerous and threatens contemporary gender equality.

The Customer is Always Right

If you’ve ever worked in customer service, you’ll have heard someone say the customer is always right. However, young people reject this way of thinking because of how rude and entitled customers can be. Older customers, in particular, cling to the notion of being right to verbally dominate servers, cashiers, and store workers.

Respect Your Elders

It’s polite to respect everybody, but young people are tired of being commanded to respect their elders when that respect is not mutual. Respect was automatically given in the past, whereas today, you must earn it through your actions. Society no longer forces young people to respect and obey their elders.

Men Make the First Move

Society has revolutionized dating a lot over the past few decades. While some people still expect men to make the first move, it’s no longer strange for women to ask men out on dates. Though it baffles older generations, society is no longer enamored with old-fashioned chivalry in relationships.

Children Should Be Seen, Not Heard

The phrase ‘children should be seen, not heard’ dates back to the Victorian era, so it’s considered massively outdated nowadays. Children are no longer excluded from society the way they used to be, so adults are happy to hear their opinions. Society encourages them to contribute to aid their development.

Women Can’t Be Breadwinners

The male breadwinner role is as old as society itself. However, CNBC reports that the number of women making as much money as their husbands has nearly tripled in the last 50 years. Female breadwinners are far less stigmatized by modern society, so it’s old-fashioned to think only men should earn high salaries.

Men Should Repeatedly Pursue Women

In the past, it was tradition for men to pursue women and win them over, but society nowadays warns against this. If a woman turns a man down and he continues pursuing her, it violates her boundaries. Society emphasizes the importance of consent, so it’s no longer acceptable to pursue women this way.

Don’t Break With Tradition

You might have heard people declare that tradition is ‘pressure from dead people,’ meaning we shouldn’t be pressured to do things a certain way just because it’s the norm. Many cultural traditions were established centuries ago, and nobody questioned them, but tradition no longer holds such power over society.

You Must Start a Career Early

Back when boomers were young, it was the norm to leave education, get a job with a large company, and work there until retirement. However, ‘job hopping’ has taken over, so many people now switch careers later in life. Society encourages people to take their time settling on the perfect career path.

Men Have No Feelings

For a long time, society has expected men to be stoic and resilient, but this is incredibly damaging. Society now advocates for men’s mental health and encourages them to share their feelings. It’s old-fashioned to accuse emotional men of being ‘feminine’ or ‘weak.’

Climate Change isn’t Real

Older generations weren’t preoccupied with the dangers of climate change like young people nowadays, but they should have been. Harvard Political Review says that society is now rife with eco-anxiety and angry young people who blame old-fashioned ideas about climate change being fake for the state of the planet today.

Formalwear is Best

The business suit ruled workplaces for most of the previous century, but society no longer uses it. Modern offices have laxer dress codes, so formal clothing would look very dated next to denim and sneakers. Formalwear is still important for funerals and weddings but is otherwise redundant.

Being Healthy Means Being Thin

A healthy body image is something that society promotes more nowadays. In the past, people thought that being healthy meant being thin, which led to the normalization of dangerous eating disorders. Young people today have more diverse role models, so they’re not beholden to old-fashioned, insidious ideas about weight.

Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child

The phrase ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’ dates back to the 1600s, which should tell you everything about how outdated it is. However, some people still recommend physical punishment when children misbehave, to the horror of modern society. Thankfully, far fewer parents use physical discipline these days.

Only Educated People Can Succeed

Education has long been accepted as the only pathway to success, but society wants us to forget that old-fashioned way of thinking. According to Reason Magazine, college enrollments began declining post-pandemic and continue to do so. College is no longer integral for success, so it’s old-fashioned to think everyone should go.

Money is Everything

Finally, while money is still essential in society, we now emphasize its significance far less than in the past. People who brag about their wealth are perceived as shallow and insecure, and money doesn’t hold the power it used to. People are happier pursuing jobs they enjoy, hitting back against old-fashioned financial beliefs designed to control society.
