18 Cars You Should Avoid Buying, According to Boomers

Boomers have plenty of experience with cars, which makes their advice invaluable when choosing one to buy. With that in mind, this article will go through 18 different car models and the reasons why boomers don’t want you to purchase them.

Ford Expedition

Most of the issues with the Ford Expedition involve its size. Due to how large it is, many owners have difficulty parking and maneuvering it in tight places. Fuel consumption is also a problem—larger vehicles use more fuel, as you likely already know, which therefore costs more money.

Ford Fiesta

CoPilot recommends avoiding the 2011 to 2016 Fiesta models due to problems with their transmissions. In addition, Fiestas are known for their stiff suspension and compact size, meaning they’re not ideal for a comfortable ride. The same goes for long journeys.

PT Cruiser

A common complaint from boomers is that this model is outdated. Discontinued in 2010, the PT Cruiser is harder to find parts for, making it more expensive to maintain. Due to its age, any car of this make that you purchase is also likely to have high mileage, meaning more wear and tear.

Fiat 500

You might want to listen to your elders on this one—the Fiat 500 has limited internal space, making it a nightmare for taller drivers or passengers. Though it’s suited for cities due to its compact size, it’s not ideal for driving outside of urban areas.

Chevrolet Spark

For all you car enthusiasts out there, you may want to avoid this model. The engine of the Chevrolet Spark has been known to lack power, making driving unsatisfying in plenty of situations. Pairing this with its low resale value makes the car an unattractive option for most.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The Mercedes G-Class has a series of issues that can put off any prospective buyer. Autocar, for example, reports that it’s very expensive to maintain this model, with high costs for both servicing and repairs. In addition, the poor fuel economy of the car makes it costly to run.

Lincoln Navigator

Another car that puts off many older folk is the Lincoln Navigator, mainly due to the costly fuel consumption and impractical nature of owning the luxury car. Its large size is also a factor in dissuading many people from buying it, as it can be difficult to maneuver in tight environments.

Many boomers are put off by how much power comes with this car’s engine—more than they would ever need to use. As the Shelby GT500 is designed with performance in mind, it also unfortunately seems to neglect to keep the ride comfortable.

Nissan Pathfinder

Transmission issues and the resulting repair costs are the main issues plaguing this car. Nissan Pathfinders from certain years are more likely to feature these transmission failures, and the coolant issues that can result from them are usually very costly to fix.

Mini Cooper

The Mini Cooper is one of the most famous cars ever made, with a production history stretching back to the ‘50s. However, the models from 2006–2012 have come under scrutiny due to problems with both the engine cooling and electrical systems. Take care to avoid a car from these years if you plan to purchase one!

As shared by Breaker Link, this car is known for engine misfires, especially the models from 2007 to 2011. Due to its reputation as a luxury vehicle, it has correspondingly high costs for repair as well, so be careful. It’s no wonder boomers are suggesting we stay away!

Jaguar X-Type

The Jaguar X-Type is known as a luxury car, but this can be a downside for many boomers, who prefer a vehicle with lower maintenance and repair costs. Coupled with the fact that certain models of this car are known for being less reliable than others, the purchase of one of these is risky.

Jeep Wrangler

Problems with reliability, especially with the older models, make recommending this car difficult for boomers. Potential issues include ignition switch failures and engine stalling, creating big problems for owners. The car’s high fuel consumption also puts off many money-conscious buyers.

Cadillac XT4

For people who see cars as long-term investments, which includes a large number of boomers, the Cadillac XT4 is not the best choice as its depreciation rate is known to be high. This, coupled with reports of reliability issues, makes it hard to suggest buying this model.

Kia Forte

The Kia Forte is known for being very basic in its selection of features, offering minimal comfort when driving (reports of a stiff ride and a noisy interior are common). There are plenty of other compact cars around the same price point that offer more features and a smoother ride.

Dodge Journey

Problems with the electricals and the wiring in Dodge Journeys are just some of the potential issues that can arise, as reported by Samarins. Various years of this model are also known for mechanical issues, and the fact that it doesn’t hold value well should give you plenty to think about.

Chrysler 200

Notorious for transmission failures in its early 2010 models, the Chrysler 200 is considered unreliable by plenty of boomers. The fact that this model was discontinued in 2017 doesn’t inspire confidence either, as finding parts becomes harder, making repairs more pricey.

Smart ForTwo

Your parents or grandparents might not be too hot on this one! The Smart ForTwo is an extremely small car, making it impractical for families. There have also been complaints about its harsh ride due to its short wheelbase and lightweight construction.
