Building a Garden Shed for Our Son: A Family Summer Project

This past summer, my husband and I embarked on a delightful two-week vacation to visit our son. While we were there, we decided to take on a special project: building a garden shed for our son to store his lawn mower tractor. It was a wonderful experience that combined family bonding, creativity, and a lot of hard work in the sunshine!

The Idea Behind the Shed

The idea for the shed came about when we noticed that our son’s lawn mower tractor needed a proper home. The tractor was an essential tool for maintaining his large garden, but without a dedicated storage space, it was often exposed to the elements.

My husband, who loves building and working on DIY projects, immediately jumped at the opportunity to construct a shed. It was the perfect excuse for him to get his hands dirty with a hammer and saw—his favorite pastimes!

Planning the Project

Before we could begin, there was a lot of planning to do. We discussed the size of the shed, the materials we would need, and the best location in the garden.

My husband wanted to make sure the shed was sturdy enough to withstand the weather and spacious enough to accommodate the tractor and other garden tools. He drew up some sketches, measured the area, and made a list of materials.

We decided on a simple but functional design with a sloped roof to allow rainwater to drain off easily. For the materials, we chose treated wood for durability and longevity, ensuring that the shed would be a long-lasting addition to the garden.

Getting to Work

Once the planning was complete, we got to work! The first few days were spent clearing the designated area and laying down a solid foundation.

My husband took the lead, measuring and cutting the wood precisely while I assisted where I could, holding up beams and handing over tools.

I must admit, I wasn’t much help in the heavy lifting, but I was great at keeping the team’s spirits high with cold lemonade and sandwiches!

As the days progressed, the structure began to take shape. My husband expertly assembled the frame, carefully ensuring each piece was securely fastened.

It was incredible to see how he meticulously measured and leveled each plank, making sure the shed was perfectly aligned.

Adding Personal Touches

While the main structure was my husband’s domain, I added my own personal touch by painting the shed’s exterior. I chose a warm, earthy color that would blend beautifully with the garden’s surroundings. We also added a few decorative touches, such as a small window to let in natural light and some hooks inside for hanging tools.

Our son joined in too, especially excited to help with installing the window and deciding on the layout for the interior. It became a true family project, with everyone contributing in their own way. Even our grandchildren got involved, painting a small mural on the side of the shed—a little family handprint tree to mark the occasion!

It’s complete!

After nearly two weeks of hard work under the summer sun, the shed was finally completed!

It was a proud moment for all of us, especially my husband, who was thrilled to see his vision come to life. The shed stood strong and beautiful, a testament to our teamwork and creativity.

To celebrate, we had a small gathering in the garden with a barbecue and toasted to our successful project. Our son was overjoyed with his new shed, and we felt a great sense of accomplishment.

Looking Ahead

Now, my husband is back home, already planning his next project—building his own shed in our garden! It seems this experience has only fueled his passion for DIY even more. I couldn’t be prouder of him, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with next.

Building the shed was more than just a construction project; it was an opportunity for our family to come together, share skills, and create lasting memories.

It was a reminder of the joys of working with your hands, the satisfaction of seeing a project through to completion, and the simple pleasure of spending time with loved ones.

Thank you for reading about our summer adventure! I hope it inspires you to take on your own garden project, big or small. Whether it’s building a shed, planting a flower bed, or simply spending more time in your garden, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of a job well done!
