16 Useless Kitchen Gadgets That Are a Complete Waste of Money

Most of us know how tempting those fancy new kitchen gadgets can be. After all, they promise to save us loads of time, make cooking easier, and practically make you into a gourmet chef overnight. But here’s the reality: a lot of these so-called “must-haves” are actually pretty useless and end up sitting in a drawer forever.

So, before you blow your budget on the next trendy gadget, take a look at these kitchen items that are more wasteful than useful.

Electric can opener

It sounds convenient, but most people really don’t need electricity to open a can. A manual can opener works just as well, takes up less space, and doesn’t require batteries or an outlet. Plus, electric models can be clunky and hard to clean. Unless you have mobility issues that make manual openers difficult to use, this gadget is pretty useless.

Banana slicer

It’s hard to understand why this one was created in the first place. I mean, a banana is one of the easiest fruits to slice – any butter knife can do the job in seconds.

A banana slicer not only takes up drawer space but also offers zero added convenience. It’s the definition of a one-trick pony that’s more of a novelty than a necessity.

Avocado slicer

Sure, avocados are trendy, but do you truly need a special tool just to cut and pit one? A regular knife and spoon work perfectly well. Avocado slicers claim to simplify the process, but they don’t do anything a basic kitchen toolset can’t handle. Plus, they’re often flimsy and awkward to store.

Egg separator

At first, it seems like a neat idea – separating egg whites from yolks without the mess. But the truth is, you don’t need a fancy gadget for this. The classic shell-to-shell method or even using your hands works just fine. This tool just adds another item to clean when you’re done.

Hot dog toaster

It sounds fun, but it’s actually just wildly impractical. A regular toaster or stovetop does the job without taking up counter space for something you’ll hardly use. Plus, cleaning a hot dog toaster is usually more work than it’s worth.

Electric knife

Unless you carve large roasts regularly, an electric knife isn’t necessary. A sharp chef’s knife will do the trick without the noise, cords, or hassle. Electric knives are also harder to clean and store, making them more trouble than they’re worth for everyday use.

Salad spinner

While some people swear by them, salad spinners are bulky and take up a ton of space. A quick shake of greens in a colander or a clean kitchen towel does the same job. Unless you eat salad every single day, this gadget will likely end up shoved in the back of a cabinet.

Egg cooker

Boiling eggs isn’t rocket science. You just need water, a pot, and a timer. Egg cookers take up counter space and do exactly what a pot of boiling water can do for free. If you’re not cooking large batches of eggs regularly, this gadget is a waste of both space and money.

Pizza scissors

Pizza cutters have been around forever for a reason – they work. Pizza scissors might look cool, but they’re awkward, hard to clean, and don’t cut any better than a standard wheel cutter. Plus, they take up more room in your drawer for no real benefit.

Pancake batter dispenser

It may seem like the perfect tool for making pancakes without the mess, but a simple spoon or measuring cup works just fine. Batter dispensers are a pain to clean and don’t save enough time to justify the extra step. Most people use them once and then forget about them.

Bagel slicer

Bagels aren’t exactly difficult to cut, especially with a sharp bread knife. A bagel slicer takes up space and doesn’t offer any real advantage. In fact, it can be more dangerous if the blade isn’t sharp enough.

Tomato slicer

Tomatoes are soft, sure, but a sharp knife handles them without any problem. A tomato slicer is just another single-use tool that takes up valuable kitchen real estate. It’s often flimsy and hard to clean properly too, making it more of a hassle than a help.

Electric salt and pepper grinders

They might look fancy, but electric grinders are more style than substance. Manual grinders are quicker, don’t need batteries, and are easier to control. People also find that electric models often break more easily.

Strawberry huller

While it looks cute, a strawberry huller really isn’t necessary. A regular paring knife removes the stem just as easily. This tool only works for one specific task as well, making it more cluttered in your kitchen drawer without much-added value.

Electric egg beater

A standard whisk or hand mixer handles eggs without any issues. An electric egg beater might seem convenient, but it’s overkill for such a simple task. It takes longer to set up, use, and clean than a basic whisk. Unless you’re baking professionally, we’d recommend passing up on this one.
