In a world torn by conflict, the call for peace remains essential. Matthew 5:9 says, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.’ We are all descendants of God, and the Bible teaches us to love one another, but there is currently a huge global outcry for peace.

The Pew Research Center found that economic inequality continues to grow. The wealth gap is huge and in a time of economic disparity, compassion for the less fortunate is crucial. This Bible verse stating, ‘Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full’ is an encouragement to help those in difficult circumstances.

‘For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me.’ Addressing issues of hunger, homelessness, and healthcare, this passage remains relevant today.

Micah 6:8

It is a harsh world we live in today, but Micah 6:8 highlights that God requires nothing of us but to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. When the modern human condition is so nuanced, it is extremely important to act in times of injustice.

Faith without action is futile in addressing societal needs. Religion is experiencing a decline, and many who consider themselves to be religious do not act accordingly in the 21st century. Faith alone isn’t enough; it is supported by good deeds, but too many are out of themselves in this day and age.

This passage says, ‘Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.’ In a world filled with distractions and temptations, the lines are blurred between what is good and what is not acceptable.

Ephesians 4:32

Healing is a hot topic now and without the practice of forgiveness and kindness, it is difficult to reconcile and grow. We have gotten too caught up in holding grudges, which only holds us back. Ephesians reminds us, ‘Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.’

Galatians 6:2

Thanks to social media, the world has become increasingly self-absorbed, but this doesn’t diminish the need for communal support and solidarity. Humanity is all about community, but social evolution has led to us becoming too individualistic. Galatians 6:2 says, ‘Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.’

The Guardian says that the U.S. is experiencing an increasingly non-religious population. In the past, religion was always a constant in times of crisis and offered hope. ‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble’ is a verse that reminds us there is always hope.

Proverbs 14:31

Social inequality has a heavy presence right now but those marked by it are often ignored in the modern world. ‘Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but those who are kind to the needy honor him’ is a Proverbs verse that highlights the importance of helping others.

Matthew 6:25

The consumer-driven culture has led to society prioritizing material possessions and appearance over experiences and values. Matthew 6:25 is a reminder that life is not about keeping up with the Joneses. The verse says, ‘Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?’

James 1:27

The news is littered with storylines about society neglecting the vulnerable. There is a critical need for compassion and moral integrity to experience a revival and James 1:27 reflects this, saying, ‘Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress.’

This passage is one that highlights that outward displays of religious routine do not make up for ignoring the needs of others. It is a sad fact that many who consider themselves to be religious turn a blind eye to those who need help.

With a materialistic society, we live in a world of greed. Luke 12:15 is a strong reminder that life is not about possessions, although many now think it is what gives them value. Luke states, ‘Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’

Societal harmony comes from love and without love for one another, societies break down. We are disconnected from our community and there is a call for love in society. According to Romans 13:10, ‘Love does no wrong to thy neighbor, therefore, love is fulfilling of the law.’ We should always act in the best interests of others.
