17 Habits Baby Boomers Still Have (and Need to Stop)

Baby boomers find it very difficult to move on and keep up with our modern society. Because of this, they have a lot of habits that people find irritating. You’ll find 17 of them in this article.

Insisting on meeting face-to-face

Baby boomers are used to meeting people face-to-face and hanging out in person. They don’t view a video call or a phone call as a good substitute for meeting in person. Baby boomers always insist on physically meeting up with others, even when they don’t have time to do so.

Sticking to old music

Boomers aren’t the only ones who love music. The National Institutes of Health says that “adults listen to music for an average of 18 hours a week (with some people reaching more than double that).” Boomers love old music and wish that music styles would return to those that were popular in their day.

Staying off social media

Baby boomers find it hard to get used to social media. If they’re on social media, they don’t like to use it often. But most of them aren’t on social media and refuse to sign up for an account. They don’t trust the internet and would prefer to communicate with others in person.

Never changing their routine

Another thing that boomers find difficult is changing their routine. Boomers love it when things stay the same. A change in routine really throws them off and makes them feel frustrated and disoriented. This can be annoying for everyone else, as we all need people to adapt from time to time.

Reading paper newspapers

Boomers find it very hard to make the switch from paper newspapers to digital news. They love the feel of a newspaper in their hands and don’t want to look for the news on the internet. Physical newspapers are almost out of print in many countries around the world so boomers will have to adapt soon.

Reading paper books

Another habit that boomers can’t control is the need to read paper books rather than electronic books. They love the feel of the paper and the excitement that comes with buying a new paper book. Even though paper books aren’t great for the environment, they won’t give them up.

Banking in-branch

According to Forbes, “the majority of Americans are now on board with digital banking. As of 2022, 78% of adults in the U.S. prefer to bank via a mobile app or website. Only 29% of Americans prefer to bank in person.” The majority of boomers prefer banking in-branch.

Cautious spending

Many baby boomers are very cautious when it comes to spending money. However, they might not need to be so cautious, as they’ve been saving their whole lives and have a relatively large retirement fund. But they’re not used to spending their money freely, so they’re reluctant to.

Being loyal to brands

Older people tend to be loyal to the brands that they’ve always used. They are reluctant to try anything else, even though a different brand might be better. They like being loyal to their brand and aren’t interested in anything else, even if a cheaper option goes on the market.

Dressing formally

Baby boomers grew up in the days when people used to dress nicely for every occasion, regardless of whether that was going to the local market or work. Suits and ties were the norm. It’s so hard for baby boomers to dress down, even when more casual dress is accepted.

Eating home-cooked meals

“A new report has found Generation Z is dishing out the most money on delivery apps and eating out at a restaurant, and the least on buying groceries and cooking at home,” says CityNews Vancouver. Boomers, on the other hand, usually insist on always eating home-cooked meals, even when it’s not convenient.

Gardening

As we get older, it’s no longer recommended that we do strenuous jobs in the garden, as we could easily injure ourselves. But most baby boomers love gardening and won’t give it up for anything in the world, even if this means using all of their energy in the garden.

Collecting items

Collectible items are often not worth as much as they used to be. This is because of the introduction of flat-pack furniture and fast fashion, which has made having more material possessions possible for the average person to obtain. Collecting items is no longer necessary.

Resisting new technology

Many baby boomers find it very difficult to adapt to new technology. New technology can make our lives easier but even still, a baby boomer might prefer to do things the old way rather than rely on new technology. This can make their lives frustrating and irritate those who want to help them.

Eating dinner early

Business Insider says, “Americans typically have dinner between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.” Boomers, however, tend to have dinner a lot earlier. This makes it difficult for them to integrate their mealtimes with the average working family and they become impatient waiting for dinnertime at other people’s houses.

Wanting old movie themes

Baby boomers love the movies that were popular when they were younger. They wish that film directors would still make movies this way today. But times have changed, people’s interests have changed, and what was popular then doesn’t sell anymore. Baby boomers must get used to today’s movie themes.

Doing DIY

Many baby boomers love doing DIY projects around the house. They have plenty of time to participate in a project and love that feeling of satisfaction when they complete it. But baby boomers are getting older and frailer and soon won’t have the strength for DIY projects.
