17 U.S. Cities Where Visitors Feel They Wasted Their Time

The United States welcomes over 50 million international tourists annually, and that figure doesn’t include domestic trips for American citizens. World-famous cities like NYC and L.A. attract vast numbers of tourists, but not every U.S. metropolis lives up to the hype. Here, we explore 17 cities in America that many visitors find consistently disappointing and pointless.

Birmingham, Alabama

The entire state of Alabama has a crime rate well above the national average, yet Gitnux claims that Birmingham, in particular, has 162% more crime and 141% more violent crime than the state average. Tourists seeking a clean, safe urban environment are often left feeling threatened and disappointed, with evidence of crime and poverty as the most common tourist ‘attractions.’

Detroit, Michigan

The Motor City has been heavily influenced by its industrial past, and evidence of the decline of its main economy (automotive production) is evident everywhere. Despite rejuvenation efforts and pockets of revitalization, vast numbers of abandoned buildings remain, and there are problems with underfunded public services and urban decay, which is a bleak destination for most visitors.

Unless you’re a college student or visiting one, you might want to avoid this deep south city, a major campus for the University of Alabama. According to College Confidential, even the resident students hate the driving style. Despite good-quality roadways, there are many poor drivers and traffic collisions. Tourists often complain about the lack of attractions.

Bakersfield, California

The Californian sun may be a draw to tourists, but Bakersfield lacks the cooling Pacific breeze of more coastal cities in the state, resulting in scorching summer temperatures. Well known for its oil industry, Bakersfield lacks the charm and attractions that draw tourists to other Californian destinations, and its depressingly industrialized landscape often disappoints visiting tourists.

Killeen, Texas

Killean is home to the military base at Fort Hood and has a predominantly military population. Consequently, it lacks a vibrant nightlife, has limited cultural opportunities, and has little for tourists to do there. Other Texan cities, like Houston, have far more to offer, and most visitors to Kileen feel they missed out on the real Texan experience.

Flint, Michigan

Located 66 miles north of Detroit, Flint is the largest city in Genesee County. NRDC reports that the ongoing water crisis that began in 2014 has cast a long shadow over the city, leaving many afraid to drink tap water due to fear of lead poisoning. Tourists often notice an air of decline, feelings of environmental degradation, and a general mistrust of local officials.

Gary, Indiana

Once a booming steel town, this unfortunate city has suffered a harsh, post-industrial decline. Abandoned factories dot the landscape, and urban decay is evident everywhere, and it pales in comparison to its more colorful and successful neighbors, like Hobart. Revitalization is being attempted, but it’s a slow process and a gargantuan task—we don’t recommend a visit!

Stockton, California

Stockton isn’t high on many tourists’ visiting lists, but those who do go often feel threatened by the high crime rate and prevalent gang activity, making them feel hesitant about exploring the city freely, especially at night or in certain areas. Besides a lingering sense of danger, the city doesn’t have much to offer in the way of amusements or cultural attractions, either.

Peoria, Illinois

Peoria is more of a stop-over for travelers heading elsewhere than a city interesting enough to attract visitors in its own right. Although it does have a few attractions (like a planetarium, museums, and a zoo), there isn’t sufficient entertainment to warrant a visit, and many visitors leave feeling like they made an unnecessary detour.

Laredo, Texas

This Texan town is situated on the US-Mexico border, and that seems to be its only draw! While it offers a taste of ‘border culture,’ the city has little historical charm, and the atmosphere is dull and soulless. Tourists would be better off visiting other Texan destinations like San Antonio or Austin, particularly if they’re looking for vibrant nightlife or cultural attractions.

Modesto, California

Modesto often serves as a pitstop for travelers heading to Yosemite National Park, which lies 86 miles east of the city. Many visitors call the city generic and don’t stay long unless visiting relatives in the area. It’s primarily made up of suburban sprawl and lacks its own distinct character, with few cultural experiences or historical sites of interest.

North Las Vegas, Nevada

Tourists often visit this city while enjoying Las Vegas, taking advantage of the budget-friendly accommodations and quieter atmosphere. Despite being close to the famous strip and the fastest-growing city in Nevada (according to Travel Nevada), it lacks iconic attractions, has limited public transportation, and leaves most visitors feeling like they missed out on fun.

Scranton, Pennsylvania

Fans of the American version of the sitcom “The Office” are probably the only people who plan on visiting this struggling, post-industrial city. The city is in danger of falling into urban decay, and there is a severe lack of tourist infrastructure, both in terms of entertainment and transportation. Many visitors leave feeling underwhelmed and aren’t quick to hurry back!

Rockford, Illinois

Like Scranton, Rockford’s industrial past and lack of major tourist attractions are setbacks to encouraging visitors. Although the city does have excellent access to surrounding wildernesses, impressive natural beauty spots, and hiking trails, it is disappointingly dull and lacks the cultural complexity found in other Midwestern destinations.

Atlantic City, New Jersey

Once a thriving gambling destination, Atlantic City has recently suffered from casino closures and economic decline, turning it into a sad and faded version of its past glory. Visitors expecting glitz, glamor, and a buzzing entertainment scene will be disappointed by what remains: dilapidated old casinos in need of refurbishment and poorly maintained, overpriced restaurants.

Compton, California

Well known for its association with gang culture and hip-hop music, Compton attracts fans of the genre and other visitors but, unfortunately, lacks the tourist infrastructure and attractions required to keep them happy and entertained. It is also notoriously unsafe, with high levels of street crime and gang violence, which can make visitors feel threatened as they explore.

Newark, New Jersey

Newark has a reputation for high crime and urban decay, which often deters tourists from venturing into the city. Those who do tend to be attracted to high-priced pockets of revitalization, although the overall atmosphere usually makes them feel unsafe and insecure. Many visitors hesitate to fully explore the urban center due to safety concerns and are often quick to depart.
