17 Hard Truths We Should Accept (According to Boomers)

Boomers are amongst the best people to learn from when it comes to learning the hard truths about life, and the sooner young people learn them, the better! So, here are 17 of those truths that boomers want to share with the younger generations.

Time Flies, Embrace It

There’s no group better equipped to warn you of the inevitable passing of time than boomers. They’ll be the first to inform you that it’s important to appreciate each moment (instead of documenting it all for social media!) and recognize the value of experiences.

Quality Over Quantity in Friendships

The younger generation’s constant bid for social media followers enhances the notion of the importance of having tons of friends, but this is not the way forward. Thought Catalog advises that it’s much better to cultivate deeper relationships instead of striving for a wider social circle.

Importance of Political Engagement

Political apathy is bad news! Boomers will be keen to tell you to recognize the power of your vote and to participate in as many political processes as you can. That way, you’ll be able to look back on your life and tell yourself that you had a say in how things happened.

The Art of Active Listening

There’s a lot more to listening than just hearing; take the time to actually understand what people are trying to say, and you’ll develop a level of empathy and thoughtful communication that will go a long way in your life. It’s an important skill for any relationship.

Adaptability is Essential

Boomers will always encourage you to embrace change as a constant and to try your best to adapt to shifting circumstances. This is a hard pill for many millennials and Gen Z to swallow, but you can blame them for resisting; we had no idea how much things would change either!

Relationships Are Investments

Relationships are never going to be easy; they require the investment of time and effort to build them into something strong and stable. This is why boomers will advise you against throwing things away because of a lack of endeavor, something that many young adults just don’t understand.

Self-care is Not Selfish

It takes people time to realize the importance of self-care, with some even going through their whole lives without ever reaching that point. As such, boomers want to be able to tell young people to get in there early and look after themselves, much to their dismay. We’re only trying to help!

Family Meals Matter

Sadly, kids often don’t want to eat dinner with their families, but if only they knew how beneficial they are! Family meals strengthen bonds and allow you all to share each other’s daily experiences. The University of Florida even claims such occasions can have positive psychological effects on everyone at the table!

Technology Can Be Dangerous

Today’s young people are embracing technology left, right, and center, but the boomers are more skeptical of it, and rightly so! They’ll be quick to advise you against sharing too much personal information online, which will often be met with “OK, boomer,” but if only they realized the risks that technology comes with!

Money Management Matters

It’s fair to say that young people are more lavish with their cash than boomers, but there’s a reason for the difference. Boomers have had many more years to learn the importance of frugality and will stress the importance of family planning to anyone who’s receptive. Listen up because they’re speaking the truth!

Social Media is All Fake

According to The Chicago School, social media creates a false sense of reality through unrealistic expectations, and it’s obvious to boomers! We’re not denying the benefits of social media, but not everything you see online is real. You kids should be cautious about the content you share and consume!

The Importance of Learning from History

Everyone can learn from the past to better navigate the future, yet millennials just aren’t interested! We try to make it fun for them through fun anecdotes from our lives, the history of others, or, indeed, the history of the world, but to no avail. One day, they’ll understand how important history is!

The Reality of Aging

Sadly, the Pew Research Centre lists many downsides to aging, such as illness, bodily changes, and cognitive slowing, but there’s no escaping it! So, embrace it and just take steps in your life to prepare for it. These include planning for the future, saving your finances, and looking after your health.

Imperfection is Inevitable

Boomers will always tell you how important it is to accept the imperfections of life, either in yourself, in others, or in the world around you. Striving too hard for perfection will only leave you feeling unfulfilled, and you’ll be much happier when you realize this!

You Can’t Please Everyone

A lot of people go through life trying to please everyone, but unfortunately, it’s not going to work all the time. Many boomers will tell you that sometimes, it’s best to focus on pleasing the people who really matter in your life instead of draining your energy on anyone.

Life Isn’t Always Fair

Sometimes, things are going to happen in life that just don’t feel fair. Boomers know that more than anyone, and they’re keen to encourage the young people of the world to show resilience and adaptability to combat these life challenges. It can make all the difference to your quality of life!

Accepting Life’s Hard Truths

Finally, the most important hard truth in life is that hard truths matter, and they’re inevitable! Life can be tough, so these hard truths can often come off as pessimistic to the youth. However, they’re seeing things with rose-tinted glasses, and if they get used to accepting hard truths today, their later life will be much easier.
