19 Subtle Signs That Someone Is Rich

Many of the richest people choose to keep their wealth a secret. You may suspect someone is rich, but how do you know unless they are openly flashing cash? If you are curious about someone’s wealth, here are 19 subtle signs that someone is rich.

Quiet luxury

It’s easy to assume that people wearing designer clothes are loaded, but in reality, this may be a sign of someone pretending to be rich when they’re not. Most wealthy people will wear quiet yet luxurious, high-quality clothing without obvious branding. It’s still probably designer, but you would never know.

When someone wears the same outfit daily, you might think they’re strapped for cash. However, rich and successful people often choose to do this as it is one less decision in their busy day. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Richard Branson are all renowned for having a ‘uniform.’

Social media secrecy

The richest people are highly private, and you will find very little on their social media. Instead of flaunting their assets and lifestyle, any active social media profiles will be a lot more wholesome, with odd snaps of family and posts about charity work. The wealthy prefer to keep things private.

They don’t flaunt their possessions

The rich don’t try to look rich because they are rich. They don’t need to impress anyone or give people a certain view of them. The Financial Times says that real money has nothing to prove, and in reality, many perceive flaunting your possessions as trashy.

Golfing

Golf can be extremely expensive, with the cost of memberships, equipment, and the lifestyle that comes with it. An avid golfer probably has tons of cash in his bank account to support this hobby. It is also a great networking opportunity for the highly successful.

Great teeth

Although some people are blessed with beautiful teeth, it is not the situation for most of us. Veneers are extremely popular but have a habit of looking fake. However, with money to spend, the rich can pay for the best of the best, achieving great teeth that look perfect yet natural.

Their dining choices

With price not an issue, the rich can choose healthy, high-quality food over processed junk. While they will certainly still enjoy a treat and some fast food occasionally, most of their diet will be nutritious, with an appreciation for organic produce and local flavors.

Using rewards points

The rich are extremely financially savvy and can use a credit card to their advantage. According to Bankrate, the average American carries credit card debt from month to month. Meanwhile, the rich pay it off, giving them a higher credit limit and thus more points to spend.

They own a horse

Horse riding is no cheap hobby, but actually owning a horse is even more costly. You will struggle to find someone living paycheck to paycheck who owns a horse. The real cost of a horse is pretty pricey, from the initial investment to new equipment and daily upkeep.

Expensive furniture

Visiting someone’s home gives you a great understanding of their wealth. The majority of our homes feature at least one piece of IKEA furniture as it’s affordable, but you will struggle to find it in the homes of the wealthy. Rich people fill their homes with expensive, high-quality furniture that is going to last.

Great artwork

If you’re exploring someone’s home, another sign of wealth is their artwork collection. Not only do the rich enjoy decorating their homes with fine art, but this is also a major investment. The wealthy have a fine appreciation for art and are willing to spend a great deal of money on the finest pieces.

Low maintenance cars

Interestingly, having an expensive car does not indicate wealth. In fact, owning a low-maintenance car is usually a sign that someone is extremely wealthy. The wealthy appreciate quality and reliability over flashy cars as they have nothing to prove, just as Business Insider in the case of Jeff Bezos.

Living location

Rich people value privacy and security very highly, and their location can tell you a lot. Most live secluded in the country or in the quietest corner of the suburbs. The most wealthy will reside in gated communities or exclusive apartment complexes.

Charity work

Philanthropy is a key indicator of someone’s wealth. Giving back, supporting important charities, and helping the local community are things that most people would love to be a part of but can rarely afford. Whilst cash amounts will never be disclosed, their open support for community projects and charitable efforts will always be shared.

Staying silent in money discussions

Those with money typically stay quiet in casual financial conversations. They have no need to flaunt their wealth, keeping their cards close to their chest. For the rich, conversations about income, taxes, and the cost of living are off the table with anyone other than accountants and business partners.

Good education

Thanks to scholarships, Ivy League schools do not discriminate on affordability. However, the education received prior to college does, and is a good sign of generational wealth. Private education demands a hefty price tag, with Niche reporting that the best in the US cost up to $50,000 per student annually.

Regular ski vacations

Skiing is an expensive hobby, and when the sport is taken on vacation rather than at the local ski mountain, the cost rapidly ramps up. Rich people love skiing and will regularly travel to ski, with many hopping across the pond to vacation in Europe. There is no doubt that this is not a cheap trip.

Small social circle

The more money or status you have, the harder it is to trust people in your life. Unfortunately, many outsiders spark relationships with the rich and successful for their own gain rather than with genuine intentions. For this reason, it is better for the rich to keep their social circle small.

They look at the price of everything

This last subtle sign may surprise you, but rich people will always carefully read price tags. Of course, those living on a budget have a strong need to do this, too, but the rich are rich for a reason, and a huge contribution is that they keep hold of their money rather than spending it frivolously.
